Patients and visitors
Healing Art Exhibit
A major part of our mission at McCullough-Hyde is healing—healing patients, their families and visitors, and we understand the healing power the arts can have on recovering patients. In fact, research shows that original artwork in a healthcare setting promotes healing and comforts and delights patients, visitors and staff. Research also demonstrates that patients who view art recover more quickly because their attitudes and outlooks are positively affected.
For this reason, McCullough-Hyde Hospital brings this innovative dimension of healing through art to our facility and adds it to our healing mission via the Healing Art Exhibit.
The hospital has established a partnership with regional artists within a 50 mile radius of Oxford to submit original works of art to the annual exhibit. All submissions are selected by a qualified juror who evaluates each piece based on originality, design, concept, technique, and appropriateness to the space and facility. The selected pieces then form the Healing Art Exhibit, which will hang in the halls of the hospital for one year.
During that time, the pieces are available for purchase by the public, but remain hanging to enhance the healing environment of the hospital. If you are interested in purchasing a work, the price and artist contact information are listed on the plaque next to it so you can contact the artist directly to arrange the sale and pick up your piece when the exhibit is renewed.
Some pieces are marked as "Purchase Award Winners." That piece has been purchased by the hospital, underwritten with funds from the Hospital Auxiliary and Medical Staff. To date, the hospital has chosen 14 pieces of art as Purchase Awards, totaling $9,875 in value. These pieces are a part of the hospital's permanent art collection and will enhance the healing environment for many years to come.
In addition to Purchase Awards, art work from the exhibit can also be donated to the hospital through private donations in memory of a loved one. For more information on Memorial Donations contact Julie Nickell, Development Director, at jnickell@mhmh.org. For information on the Healing Art Exhibit or submitting artwork for the 2013 exhibit, contact Jean Vance, project manager, at jeanvanceartist@msn.com.
A self-guiding brochure is available in the lobby of the hospital. We hope you will take time to explore the exhibit and experience your own form of healing!
