WOMEN'S HEALTH & OBSTETRICS: Sibling Class

About the Class

The Sibling Class provided by McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital promotes healthy relationships between older children and their new siblings. We also provide support to parents by helping them to prepare for the transition of a new baby.

The instructor for the course will be a Registered Nurse who is one of the Obstetrics Services staff.
The instructor will talk about:
  • Preparation for the new baby
  • Show where mom will be at the hospital
  • Show the nursery and perhaps see a newborn

The children will be acquainted with:
  • What a new baby looks like
  • What new babies do the first weeks of life
  • Some safety issues

Parents will receive information on talking to their children about the new arrival. Siblings will receive a certificate of completion.

Children ages 2-12 and their parents are encouraged to attend. Children of other ages may be permitted to attend after parents discuss the need with the instructor. At least one parent is required to stay for the class. The children are asked to bring a picture of themselves when they were a newborn.
