MRSA Eradication
Program Thank you for choosing McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital for your health needs. |
Eradication of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital's health care teams are dedicated to providing the best care, including protecting our patients from infections while in the hospital. To help protect our patients it is important for us to know if they are carrying MRSA. For our pilot program, all patients from extended care facilities and patients having joint replacements will be screened for MRSA.
MRSA is a very common bacteria which is present in hospitals and in the community.
Many people carry the organisms in and on their bodies without symptoms and can unknowlingly pass them from person to person if important precautions are not taken.
Screening for MRSA
To screen for MRSA, a nurse will swab the inside of the nose with small sterile swabs. The swabbing is painless, but the patient may feel a tickling sensation. The swab is then sent to the Laboratory for processing.
What if MRSA is found?
If a patient is found to have MRSA, they will be placed in special precautions called "contact precautions" to prevent the spread of the organism to others. Health care workers entering the room will wear gowns and gloves. They will provide the patient with information to protect themselves, their family and friends. If the patient is having surgery, the surgeon will give the patient special instructions and antibiotics before surgery to prevent the bacteria from giving patient an infection as they recuperate.
