Planned 3000 sq. foot Oncology Clinic Expansion in the hospital's west wing will offer easy access from the hospital parking lot, plus much more space for patients and their families, including the option of privacy on the days they need it. There will also be a dedicated room for blood draws, two private rooms with beds, and a consultation room, plus much more room for family members to stay right with the patients during their treatments, which can last for several hours. THE NUMBERS Begun in a small corner of the hospital 26 years ago, the clinic initially served an average of 10 patients per month. Presently, that number has risen to an average of 242 patients per month—reaching a total of nearly 2,000 patients in 2006. A future 4% annual growth is predicted. Clearly, the need for oncology services is great, and growing. Every day, an average of 72 people in Ohio die from cancer, and another 168 are diagnosed with some form of the disease. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death for Ohio adults after heart disease and the second-leading cause of death in children (after deaths from injuries). CURRENT ONCOLOGY CLINIC CONDITIONS:
For patients needing their own room
For patients to relax in a peaceful environment For wheelchairs to maneuver easily For patients waiting for transportation
OUR SOLUTION Because of the clinic’s relationship with other departments, it is critical that the Oncology Clinic remain on the hospital campus. We’ve determined that the under-utilized wing currently occupied by the Wellness Center offers ample space and access for the future clinic. An architectural firm has developed plans(above) for a major remodeling of the space. The new Oncology Clinic will feature eight treatment chairs in much larger spaces, each offering more privacy and room for family members to stay with the patient during treatment. Two private chemotherapy rooms will also allow a patient to lie down during treatment. A new consultation room will be large enough to accommodate the physician, treatment team, patient and family members. A new phlebotomy room for blood draws and a larger exam area for bone marrow biopsies will afford even more privacy for patients. Patient privacy and healing will also be enhanced with an expanded reception area and a new nursing work station. The emphasis on more space and privacy will make the entire treatment process much less stressful and more positive for both the patients and their families. Our New 3,000 square-foot State-of-the-Art Facility Will Provide:
Designated Room for Blood Draws Consultation Room For patients needing a private room Space
For patients to relax in a peaceful environment For wheelchairs to maneuver easily For patients waiting for transportation
VOICE FOR EXPANSION Dr. Tom Speh MHMH Board of Directors, President, Volunteer, Former Patient Advocate Dr. Speh’s wife, Michele, was a former patient of the clinic who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2000. “The clinic made it easy for us to be positive…It was a unique and special time for us. But some people are very private about that experience. When the clinic is expanded, they’ll be able to deal with those individual desires and needs.” Our goal is to raise a total of $578,000 by the end of 2008 to finance the building of the new Oncology Clinic. To date $380,000 has been raised, leaving $198,000 remaining to be raised.
