The Birthing Experience is a comprehensive childbirth education program. Instructors are registered nurses employed by the McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital Obstetrics staff. These nurses are also certified in Childbirth Education and/or are Certified Lactation Consultants, or counselors.Because we are committed to community health, the program offers a series of classes at various convenient times and locations (see schedule below), as well as at minimal cost. Each series consists of four classes. Each class is packed with valuable information expectant mothers will not want to miss. Class 1: "Labor: Just the Facts, Ma’am," discusses the anatomy and physiology of term pregnancy, stages of labor with and introduction to breathing prophylaxis and emotional, mental and physical changes in labor. Class 2: "Ready, Set, Breathe," teaches breathing techniques for labor, relaxation techniques, including massage and effleurage, visualization strategies, exercise preparation for labor, labor drill and comfort measures (pain management). Class 3: "Let’s Get Graphic," will inform you of the warning signs during your pregnancy and unexpected outcomes and C-sections. We also feature a night at the movies: "What Can I Expect When the Unexpected Happens," and "Vaginal and C-section Deliveries." Class 4: "Your Amazing Newborn," will include information on what your baby will "look like," how to care for your newborn, newborn feeding choices and lactation preparation.
